Frequently Asked Questions
HOW DOES MEET SUPPORT WORK?
All of the major events in our Club Calendar are listed on the Upcoming Event page of our web site.
Each swim meet excluding Club Racing Nights are allocated a Meet Support level as follows:
Red:
Full support – Waves Swimming Club (Waves) organizes everything and
travels as a team. Waves contracts SportsCoach South (SCS) Head Coach Support
at the meet.
Green:
Full Deck Side support – Waves swimmers arrange all travel and accommodation
if applicable. Waves contracts SCS Head Coach Support.
Blue:
Partial Deck Side support – Waves swimmers arrange all travel and
accommodation if applicable. Waves contracts SCS Assistant Coach Support.
Black:
No Deck Support. Wave’s swimmers arrange all travel and accommodation
if applicable. No Coach support will be available.
This definition also appears on the Docs and Policy Page of the web site.
Last year Orca was a Red Meet because we wanted to use it as a full dress rehearsal for future National Meets. Please note that this year it is a Green Meet.
Last year Waves Swimming Club did not go to Wharenui although individual swimmers did go. This year we are going and the meet is designated as another Green Meet.
Please book accordingly for these meets.
WHAT MEETS DO I SWIM IN?
We frequently get asked what meets we expect our swimmers to swim in.
SportsCoach South has a contract with the DCC to provide Professional Coaching Services at Moana Pool. As such we focus on developing competitive swimmers and we have formed the Waves Swimming Club to support this endeavour.
We have then worked with Swim Otago to develop a comprehensive swim meet Calendar to provide for all levels of competition.
As a general rule we expect our swimmers to swim in "age and ability" appropriate meets.
Our Pre Squad and Junior swimmers should swim in our Club Racing Nights and Blue meets. If they so chose they can swim in Black meets.
Our Junior Extension swimmers should swim in Club Racing Night, Green and Blue meets. Some of them will also swim in National Juniors, a Qualification meet.
All other swimmers – Intermediate, Senior Transition and Senior swimmers are expected to swim at Club Racing Night, Green meets, Blue meets and all of the Red meets that they qualify for.
The above is a statement of general intention. However, we realize that there are numerous situations where swimmers can’t meet the above expectations. This may include but is not limited to, holidays, exams, study, sickness, other sporting or family commitments, etc.
If a swimmer in the Junior Extension group or above is going to miss a meet we appreciate that this may be necessary, however, we would appreciate you discussing this with your coach. We believe that this is just courtesy given that we put a lot of time into preparing you to compete. We will not normally insist that you compete unless there are exceptional circumstances such as a major meet pending and we believe that this racing is an important part of your preparation.
